Why GenCoE Matters

Despite Africa being home to the most genetically diverse population on the planet, African people and people of African descent are represented in just 1% of genomic analyses. GenCoE is changing this by building Africa's capacity to lead genomic research that benefits the continent and the world.

Addressing Global Inequity

Less than 3% of global genomic datasets come from Africa. We're closing this gap through African-led research and data generation

Advancing Precision Medicine

Enabling treatments and diagnostics tailored to African genetic profiles, improving health outcomes across the continent

Building Capacity

Training the next generation of African genomic scientists and establishing sustainable research infrastructure

Strengthening Health Security

Enhancing Africa's ability to respond to pandemics and emerging diseases through genomic surveillance

Driving Drug Discovery

Supporting pharmaceutical development informed by African genomic diversity for global benefit

Fostering Collaboration

Uniting researchers, governments, and industry partners in a coordinated continental network

Strategic Focus Areas

Pathogen Genomic Surveillance

Monitoring infectious agents and emerging threats to boost pandemic preparedness and response capabilities

Genomics-Informed Precision Public Health

Delivering optimal treatment through understanding of genetic variations and their impact on health

Next-Generation Research Training

Developing and training the African genomics workforce to ensure sustainable capacity

The GenCoE Network

GenCoE establishes a coordinated network of Centres of Excellence across Africa, each partnered with academic institutions and public health facilities. The network is overseen by a Coordinating Centre hosted by Jhpiego in Kigali, Rwanda, ensuring alignment with national health priorities and facilitating cross-country collaboration.
